Sun Announces Data and Storage Management Services

With worldwide spending on storage services consulting predicted by International Data Corp. (Framingham, MA) to increase from $989 million in 1997 to $4.8 billion annually in 2002, Sun Microsystems Inc. plans to get its share. The Palo Alto, CA-based computer maker this week announced Sun Data And Storage Management Services.

The new Data And Storage Management Services feature:

  • storage assessment, architecture, and implementation;
  • storage consolidation;
  • storage performance analysis and tuning, backup and restore assessment;
  • architecture and implementation;
  • remote data access;
  • data migration;
  • disaster recovery; and
  • storage area networks (SAN) architecture and implementation.


Designed for high-end, data center environments, the Sun StorEdge L700 Tape Library provides a platform for serving the growing enterprise storage market.

In related news, Sun announced this week the new StorEdge L700 tape library—the first of its high-end network storage systems through its OEM agreement with StorageTek Corp. (Louisville, CO), signed in August. Based on the 9840 tape drive technology available from StorageTek since 1998, the StorEdge L700 tape library is aimed at service providers and the new Internet-based companies, the company said.
