Resilient Routing Platform
A resilient Internet routing platform offers 15 payload slots available for DS3, OC-3/STM-1, OC-12/STM-4 and LAN interfaces. In a single 7 in. rack, a fully loaded IP9520 Resilient Routing Platform with redundant backbone connections delivers up to 3,136 T1 ports and 14,336 fractional T1. With efficient use of scarce PoP rack space, the router is useful for traffic aggregation applications in Service Provider networks. The platform fully leverages the company's Internet-proven IP9000 products and Ipaction routing software. IP9000 Forwarding Engines support ATM, SONET, DS-3 and LAN interfaces, and can be used in either the IP9000 or IP9500 series platforms.
With 15 slots available for interface-bearing Forwarding Engines, a single platform hosts up to 60 OC-3 or channelized DS-3 ports. In a standard 7 in. rack, the platform's routers outfitted with resilient OC-12 uplinks can accommodate up to 112 DS-3 ports supporting 3,136 T1 ports and 14,336 fractional T1 ports, or up to 112 OC-3 ATM ports supporting 229,376 virtual circuits.
The core architecture separates packet forwarding from background processes, and runs those background processes as independent software tasks in protected memory. The platform complements this architecture, adding full hardware resiliency with hot-swap for all system elements and full redundancy of power supplies, cooling trays, Switch Fabrics and Route Processors. The product will be generally available worldwide in the first quarter of 1999.
