Pirelli's single-mode fiber optic cable products now available with latest Corning fiber
Pirelli Cables and Systems North America announced today that, effective during the second quarter of 2001, its fiber optic cable products will be available with Corning® SMF-28eTM fiber, an extension of Corning's single-mode fiber product line that offers network designers enhanced ability to create higher-capacity, lower-cost networks.
Pirelli fiber optic cable with Corning SMF-28e fiber, introduced earlier this year, is intended for unamplified systems and brings new functionality to service providers such as ILECs, CLECs, CATV and utilities. The new fiber features low attenuation at the water peak, which opens a new operating window to allow the transmission of more information over the same number of optical fibers.
The enhanced fiber overcomes a traditional characteristic of single-mode fiber in which attenuation of an optical signal increases in the wavelength range near 1383 nanometers, also called the "water peak" range. In this range, hydroxyl ions in the glass core of the fiber absorb light, significantly weakening the signal. This limitation reduces a fiber's overall ability to transmit additional channels and the fiber's total bandwidth capability.
By overcoming attenuation in the water peak range, Pirelli fiber optic cable with Corning SMF-28e fiber increases the channel count available to network designers. The increased channel count, in turn, increases fiber capacity and enables the use of less costly coarse wavelength multiplexing (CWDM) technologies for further capacity increases.
"The addition of Corning SMF-28e fiber is a natural extension of our fiber optic cable product line," Brian DiLascia, vice president and general manager of Pirelli's Communications Division in North America, said. "Pirelli is a consistent technological leader in the fiber optic industry, and we are committed to providing our customers with a wide range of fiber cable solutions with the most recent enhancements available."
Corning SMF-28e fiber complies with the U.S. standard, TIA/EIA 492-CAAB, and the international standard, ITU G.652.c.
Pirelli offers armored and unarmored loose tube fiber optic cables and ribbon fiber optic cables for Outside Plant applications. Pirelli fiber optic cables feature Dri-Flex™ dry water-blocking technologies that cut down on installation time and reduce installation costs. In addition, Pirelli has been a consistent technological leader in developing high-fiber-count cables.
