The MegaRam-5000 is a solid state disk that utilizes a native Fibre Channel architecture. This architecture eliminates the need for a SCSI to Fibre bridge and allows it to run at twice the speed of any other solid state disk system. The system offers an Ultra-2 SCSI interface and boasts a multitude of features necessary for a storage area network (SAN), including large storage capacity, high availability and a wide internal bandwidth. It supports Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) configurations, storage-area network (SAN) hub and switched fabric configurations. The device is "Solaris Ready" and compatible with switches from many manufacturers, including Brocade, Chaparral, and Gadzoox.

The system features up to eight FC ports, 16 Ultra-2 SCSI ports, or a combination of both types. A multiple interface capability allows the device to support up to 16 individual host computers simultaneously, or provide a single host computer with high data transmission rates through multiple data paths. The system boasts a 230 MB per second internal bus. This bandwidth, without the restriction of a SCSI to Fibre bridge, allows the ports to operate at full speed: Fibre ports at 100 MBps and Ultra-2 SCSI ports at 80 MBps.

The system features dual AC inputs, redundant hot-swap power supplies and battery packs, and redundant hot-swap fan assemblies. If an extended power interruption is encountered, a hot-swap internal disk backup system ensures data integrity by automatically writing all data to a conventional disk. Built-in patrol diagnostics continuously monitor the status of all system components to further ensure optimum operability. The system has incorporated an advanced proprietary error-correcting feature that automatically detects and corrects errors as large as six full bytes. For remote administration, an Ethernet port with remote SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) capabilities is provided.
