The Telebyte Model 454 is a compact laboratory, field instrument and/or production test unit that precisely simulates the frequency response of a single 26 AWG copper cable pair used for the local loop by Telcos. The unit simulates the frequency response of both the amplitude characteristic and the delay or phase of the local loop. The unit presents a simulation accurate at frequencies extending from DC to 1,100 KHz and for local loop lengths extending up to 18,500 feet.

The Model 454 is comprised of separate sections that can individually simulate the characteristics of cable lengths of 500 feet, 1,000 feet, 2,000 feet and 3,000 feet. These sections can be connected in tandem to allow simulation, in 500 foot increments, of any length up to 18,500 feet. Tandem connection is accomplished by pressing front panel 'push button' switches.

The unit is totally passive. This leads to long lifetime and high reliability especially when employed in a harsh production environment. The unit has two bi-directional ports. The Model 454 is intended for testing higher speed local loop transmission products such as XDSL (HDSL, ADSL etc) modems/transceivers, T1/E1 modems and others. These products use sophisticated modulation techniques to achieve high spectral efficiency, bits per HZ, on copper cable. The Model 454 provides the high accuracy in simulating the frequency characteristic of the cable needed to judge performance. Furthermore, the unit is a convenient device for testing either during development in the laboratory or on the production line.
