Lucent Technologies Joins 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance

Source: Lucent Technologies
Lucent Technologiess considerable industry weight behind the 10 Gbps Ethernet development effort, <%=company%> (Murray Hill, NJ) today announced it will be joining the recently formed 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance as one of its founding members. The mission of this new organization is to support the IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet standards process and promote 10-Gigabit Ethernet for LAN, metropolitan area network (MAN), and wide area network (WAN) markets.

In addition to Lucent, the other founding members of this consortium include 3Com Corp. (Santa Clara, CA), Cisco Systems (San Jose, CA), Extreme Networks (Cupertino, CA), Intel Corporation (Santa Clara, CA), Nortel Networks (Brampton, ON), and Sun Microsystems (Palo Alto, CA), and World Wide Packets (Spokane, WA).

Positioned as a high-speed technology for networking applications in both local- and wide-area networks, 10-Gigabit Ethernet will combine very high bandwidth with simplicity. In LAN applications, 10-Gigabit Ethernet will enable enterprise network managers to scale their packet-based networks from 10 Mbps up to 10,000 Mbps while leveraging existing investments in Ethernet. In MAN and WAN applications, 10-Gigabit Ethernet will enable Internet service providers and network service providers to create high-speed links at very low cost between co-located carrier-class switches and routers.
