Interoute's main challenge was to provide solutions for digital access to audio/video files during times of peak demand. On a Europe-wide scale, this translates into hundreds of thousands of customers trying to access thousands of files through the same networks, all at the same time. Interoute needed a system that would address the increasing operational pressures created by this data explosion, and significantly improve access to the digital data streaming through its network. In addition to a "no single point of failure" system, Interoute required a solution that would allow this access without bottlenecks, using features such as dynamic load balancing. An additional requirement was seamless system scalability, to address both peaks in short-term demand, and long-term growth in both the media files and the customer base.

The dynamic capacity and load balancing features in ExaStore enable Interoute to deal efficiently with peak demand, in real time. With a large number of Web servers accessing the storage system, the system's load balancing feature takes on critical importance. ExaStore software routes client requests automatically from each of the Web servers to the least-loaded ExaStore node. As a result, complete accessibility to websites and data is assured, even during the most highly trafficked periods.
