With 1,500 users demanding access to 32 file servers running critical medical applications and patient data, Rick Taylor, technical manager for Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, had to put a priority on making storage and management easy and dependable. Due diligence led him to Xiotech's Magnitude 3D clustered storage to replace his traditional storage area network (SAN).

"We chose to replace our traditional SAN with Magnitude 3D because we wanted the virtualization capabilities Magnitude 3D supports," Taylor explains. "When we need more storage on any drive, we simply add a disk and it's ready to go with just a few keystrokes. We don't have to reconfigure anything, and we can keep all applications fully operational while we reprovision."

This sophisticated provisioning is vital in an environment that is storing new data at the rate of half a terabyte per year. And of course, all this data storage requires a backup solution as well, which is especially challenging in a 24x7 operation with 1.5 TB of data under management.
