Bluesocket Promotes Philip Bates To EVP and UK General Manager

Wireless Networking Company Co-founder Takes On Responsibility For UK Operations

London, 3 October 2001: Bluesocket Inc., the fast-growing developer of wireless local area network (WLAN) solutions for securely connecting and managing wireless devices to corporate networks and the Internet, has today announced that its co-founder Philip Bates has taken the role of Executive Vice President and General Manager, UK. The role puts Bates at the forefront of Bluesocket's commercial roll-out in Europe.

In his new role, Bates will be responsible for sales and business development in Europe and will oversee product development and marketing. He takes on the role following the highly successful setting up of Bluesocket's operation in the United Kingdom as VP of Business Development.

Commenting on the appointment, Eric Janszen, CEO of Bluesocket said, "A great deal of Bluesocket's success can be attributed to Philip's vision of the future of wireless networking in the enterprise. He has taken this enthusiasm and built the UK operation up to 30 people in under one year, attracting to Bluesocket some of the industry's leading players including Mike Pye (from 3Com) and Martin Cassidy (from Ericsson) in the process. The fact that our first commercial sale, to KPMG Consulting, came out of the London office is testimony to the strength of the team that Philip has brought together. I am delighted to confirm his appointment as Executive Vice President." Janszen continued, "Europe has always been half-a-step ahead of the US in wireless technology and the potential for Bluesocket in the European market is immense. To have someone of Philip's experience and stature leading our drive into that market backed up by a world-class management team gives us major encouragement for the future."

Philip Bates co-founded Bluesocket in 1999 with David Crosbie. He has twenty years of telecommunications experience both as an industry executive with British Telecom and ICO, and as a telecommunications consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Bates holds an MA in engineering from Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and an MBA from Warwick Business School. He is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
