Alcatel Trials Voice Over DSL with Singtel, Tdsoft

Networking equipment maker Alcatel (Paris), a developer of digital subscriber line (DSL) has entered a strategic alliance with SingTel, Singapore's largest telco, and Tdsoft Communications (Herzelia, Israel), a developer of voice over "next generation" access solutions. The companies plan to conduct the first voice over DSL trial service in Singapore. This service will offer end users integrated voice and fast Internet access over a single copper pair using ADSL broadband access technology.

Consequent to the success of this trial, SingTel will be the first carrier in the region to offer voice services over ADSL to its subscribers. Voice over DSL is a technology that allows additional voice calls to be carried over normal telephone lines. With the ADSL infrastructure in place, up to 16 additional digital calls can now be added on to the existing telephone wire, in addition to the traditional analog calls.
