Pirelli Cables and Systems announced the availability of next-generation non-zero dispersion-shifted optical fiber from Corning Inc. for fiber optic cable products.
The LEAF fiber is a single-mode non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber designed to improve the performance of high-speed systems. It has a larger effective area than existing non-zero dispersion-shifted fibers. This reduces light intensity, allowing more power to be pumped into the fiber. Consequently, the fiber allows longer distances between amplifiers without detrimental non-linear effects.
The fiber gives system designers the capability to meet the bandwidth requirements of future systems by providing for more channels.
